Elaine Huber (University of Technology, Sydney) The purpose of this session is to workshop ways of working within a new evidenced-based evaluation-planning framework for project evaluation in higher education. The framework extends the project evaluation resources developed for the Australian Office for Learning and Teaching and the work of evaluation scholars such as Rick Chesterton, David Cummings, John Owen, Michael Patton, Murray Saunders and Daniel Stufflebeam.
The framework will be introduced to participants and explained by the presenter (approx. 20 minutes) with questions encouraged during this time. Participants will have time to critically reflect on the framework and its applicability to their own context.
The following questions will be asked of the participants:
- What do you understand the term 'evaluation' as applied to a (learning and teaching) project?
- How do you feel about evaluation?
- What do you like about this framework (what works well)?
- What parts of this framework do you think need improvement?
- What is missing from this framework?
- Is the framework practical? (if not, what is needed to make it more so)
- Could you start to evaluate your project using the framework template?
Depending on numbers, this activity will be carried out in pairs, small groups or as one round-table type discussion. Handouts will be provided.
By the end of the session, participants will have begun to think through the application process and will be able to take away an evaluation plan that is practical and can be deployed on their own project.
The presenter will take away participants' written answers to the questions and the data will be used as evidence in a doctoral research study. Prior to the start of this session participants will be required to give their consent to this being undertaken. Participants can request access to findings from the study once published.
